2026 Bursary Essay - Liam
Having a family member serve in the Canadian Armed Forces has given me a deep appreciation for dedication, sacrifice, discipline, and service to others. My great-grandfather, Alastair Grant Wilson, served as a Sergeant in the 904 Branch of Service from June 29, 1929, until his honourable discharge on December 26, 1940. I also have family members on my father’s side who have also served, his father and grandfather. Knowing that they devoted over a decade of their lives to serving Canada fills me with pride and has shaped the values I strive to demonstrate in my daily life.
Although I never had the opportunity to meet him, learning about his service has taught me the importance of perseverance, responsibility, and leadership. The commitment required to serve in the Canadian Armed Forces is something I deeply admire. It takes courage, discipline, teamwork, and the ability to remain composed under pressure — qualities I work hard to embody through academics, athletics, officiating, and mentoring younger athletes.
Throughout high school, I have maintained Summa standing every year while balancing athletics, leadership opportunities, and community involvement. Sports have been a major part of my life since the age of four. I played hockey until the age of fifteen,
including winning a Gloucester Hockey Association Championship as a second-year U15 player, before transitioning to competitive basketball. I also continue to play fastpitch every summer. Through these experiences, I have developed resilience,
accountability, teamwork, and strong communication skills.
In addition to competing in sports, I have dedicated time to mentoring and coaching younger athletes in Grades 7 and 8. I enjoy helping younger players build confidence and improve their skills, while also encouraging sportsmanship and respect for others. I
believe these experiences reflect the same sense of service and leadership that my great-grandfather demonstrated through his military career.
For the past three years, I have also worked as a District 9 hockey official, during which I have received positive evaluations and feedback on my professionalism, communication, and game management. Officiating has strengthened my confidence,
decision-making, and ability to remain calm under pressure. I was expected to advance to the Central Officiating Division next season; however, I have chosen to pursue post-secondary education in Quebec to further my passion for sports and begin studies
specializing in Athletic Therapy.
I will be attending a university accredited by the Canadian Association of Athletic Therapists to become an athletic therapist for professional sports teams. Depending on opportunities following graduation, I also hope to pursue medical school and specialize
in Sports Medicine. No matter where my future career takes me, I hope to continue serving and supporting others through healthcare, athletics, leadership, and mentorship.

Knowing the sacrifices and dedication shown by my great-grandfather has inspired me to approach every opportunity with commitment and integrity. His service reminds me that leadership is not simply about personal success, but about contributing positively to others and working toward something greater than yourself. I am proud to carry forward those values through my education, athletics, officiating, and future career aspirations.
